Greasy, loud, expensive, rude owner, they also charge for extra tortillas.

We are visiting from CA and thought there would not be a selection of Mexican restaurants, to our surprise there was. We asked some local people to refer us to a couple and I must say the food was delicious, fresh and beautifully presented! We went after church on sunday 12:30pm roughly and it was a packed house, the wait was about 10 minutes and the one and only thing we were not fond of was how noisy it was, super noisy. I may suggest going after 2pm if you wish to have a conversation, other then that the food and service was excellent. Enjoy!

During my month-long stay in Johnson City I tried to get a taste of a myriad of flavors that were available in the area and Poblano's was one I couldn't ignore, especially since it sat directly across the street from my hotel. I walked over on a Sunday afternoon to try the tacos that get all the buzz from this place: the bacon and shrimp tacos. I'm just like every other American and I love me some bacon so I figured that this could only be a win. Two of my favorite things - Mexican and bacon - in one meal. So, my hopes were up and my expectations perhaps a bit too high. The hostess and later my server, were not the greatest start to my meal. Although the place was fairly empty, they acted like my presence was an extreme inconvenience to them. They sat me in a corner in the far back of the restaurant where a bunch of other staff were either talking loudly (and inappropriately) and eating or shining glasses. I felt very uncomfortable near them as they talked badly about customers and frequently looked over at me like I was encroaching on their territory. Once my meal came my server left to join his comrades, never to be seen again (even when it was time to pay my check - I had to go up to the front to pay and request my bill). I learned a great lesson from my experience at Poblano's: bacon doesn't belong on everything. In fact it certainly doesn't belong on shrimp tacos. Quite honestly they tasted terrible. The texture and flavors were just vile. I actually felt a bit sick from the aftertaste when I went to bed that night despite brushing my teeth very well. I guess I will be the odd one out on reviewing Poblano's and give it my very enthusiastic thumbs-down!

This is still tex mex, but with a lot more choices and fresher, more authentic style recipes. They have a small salsa bar, excellent black bean dip, and the food is delicious. Worth a visit if you haven't.

Holy crap this place is a gem !! Food is good! Par and a birdie for the most part. Drinks or good great margaritas. Service I got was very good . I know I will come back to this one if I ever get the chance .

I did not know Mexican food could be so bland. Even the table side guacamole was tasteless and too chunky. The service was horrible as well. I will give them one star because they make a fabulous Margarita! This is our third time here and each time has been an issue. We will not be back.

Very good! Felipe's burrito had a nice heat and a good taste. It was a very nice change from the typical Mexican fare in the Tri-Cities. I would highly recommend if you want a big city flavor on a ticket less than what you'd pay for mediocre food at Amigos. We'll be back, I'm sure of that!

Decent food, puréed refried beans, and the world's tiniest tacos. Will pass this place up in the future. Too little good food for the price.

Food is not bad, but not special either. I've eaten here three times now--the green verde salsa and the shrimp are good; the service is consistently below average; and tonight the taco shell on the Amigo Bowl tasted...odd. Overall--decent. I live close by; otherwise, El Charolais would get all business from my Mexican food cravings.

Loved it!! We went at lunch and the prices were right on for a ton of food. I had the lunch fajitas and my friend had the taco salad. Both were great! This seems to be more authentic than the other Mexican restaurants we have in the area. Service was great and restaurant was very clean. I will definitely be back.

The best part was the bean dip, it was good. Poor service. Server didn't even tell us there was a salsa bar. Food was ok. Overall... Not friendly staff and ok food.

My daughter and wife have been scoping out Johnson City food joints for over a year since our relocation to the area. So today when I mentioned getting Mexican for lunch my daughter headed for Poblanos. She was excited to go there and extolled their menu. Well she was right. The menu has a variety of different items than you find in the standard Tex Mex or Mexican American place. They have alternatives to flour and corn tortillas and do a selection of lettuce wraps. I had the BTO. Not exactly sure the meaning but the burrito looking concoction was awesome. They do a guacamole at the table and have a fresh salsa bar. Yep, planning on a few return trips to Poblanos!

Best Mexican in Tri-Cities...since Chaco's I'm told. Tried the house margarita (3/5), good but you can make it at home, gigantic chicken burrito (5/5), worth every bite and the table side guacamole (6/5) is the best I've ever had. The service was unimpressive, but a 32oz XX will forgive a multitude of sins. Definitely looking forward to going back.

Food was great. We weren't expecting that. It's right off the freeway and we thought it might be a typical chain-type place, but it's not. We liked the salsa bar. The tomatillo salsa was made with fresh ingredients and was delish. The waiter, Alejandro was very good. My only disappointment was that he was told to go on break when we were just about finished, so we had a different waitress. I don't like that. Waiters and waitresses should always finish with their tables. Overall it was a good experience and should we travel that way again, we'd like to go back.

Tried this place last week while visiting the family. The salsa bar is pretty pitiful, looked like canned salsa and taste wasn't anything exciting. I got the shrimp/bacon tacos. All you could taste was bacon. Dont get me wrong, I love bacon but it overpowered everything else. My dad got the steak fajita's which he sent back due to being tasteless and lots of grissle. I tasted the meat and it was pretty bland. The manager did come and fix him something else but still didn't appear to please my dad. My mom got the chicken fajitas and she said they were also terrible but she wasn't about to complain after my dad did. Oh well, once again I was cheering for a new place but............

Average Mexican food for the area. Its pretty much like every other Mexican themed restaurant in the tri-cities. They do have serve yourself salsa bar so you can choose between what salsas and how much of each- for free. Good bar area with fantastic drink deals. The restaurant is right off I-26.

Ate here tonight. I had the enchiladas supremas and they were good. Chips were hot and good too. They have a salsa bar on ice so its nice and cool. Big screen televisions with the Richmond race on too. I also had the fried ice cream for dessert and it was great but how can you go wrong with ice cream?

I had high hopes for this new restaurant, and sadly it did not live up to any of them. I ordered red wine sangria which was quite literally undrinkable. It tasted as if someone had mixed the poorest quality wine possible with rotten fruit. As someone who has tried sangria all over the place, I've really seen it run the gammut from bad to wonderful but this is the first time I've been completely unable to drink it. The pico de gallo wasn't fresh andt he tomatoes used were extremely under-ripe. I ordered the BTO, hoping "the founder's favorite" would be good. Sadly, it was about 95% rice and beans. The beans were flavorless, the "guacamole" amounted to a couple of pieces of avocado dropped in the end of the burrito as an afterthought, and the salsa verde- though plentiful- was void of all flavor. The carne asada was the only ingredient worthy of mention, as it was fairly tasty, though there was little of it present in the burrito . $40 later, my husband and I were left extremely disappointed and sure that we would not be returning.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
